STORM DAMAGE UPDATE

The storm earlier this month took down much of our fencing and caused fairly severe erosion, principally on our East End. The DPA, with cooperation and funding from our Erosion Control District (ECD), mounted a project to salvage and repair much of our fencing. Before and after pictures are below. Many thanks to John Lund for spearheading this effort and to Bobby Palermo for getting it done!

The storm took a large bite out of our dunes and rendered the ramp on Trustees Walk and the vehicle cut to the beach impassable. See pictures below. While the Fire District and Fire Department made contingency plans for mutual aid to assist in an emergency, the Town -- again, at no cost to the community --  jumped in to open the vehicle cut. Many thanks to all of them.

Again thanks to John Lund, the Town and our ECD, we were one of only two Fire Island communities that purchased and stockpiled sand from the FIMI dredges. The Town undertook to move that sand from the beach to the stockpile areas, also at no cost to the community. We are now putting that sand to good use. Suffolk County will purchase the ECD sand at cost and, together with sand salvaged from Trustees Walk and elsewhere, will reopen Trustees Walk and shore up our dunes. This project will be accomplished at no cost to the community or our ECD and the ECD will be made whole for the cost of the sand. The ECD has ample funds to replenish our stockpile from Army Corps dredges that we understand will be back in our area, hopefully this season.

The productive partnership and good working relationship we have with the Town and County can only benefit our community and we thank them for their efforts on our behalf. If you have questions or comments, please let us know and we will pass them on to Councilman Neil Foley with our thanks. We'd also like to give a shout out to Michelle DiBritta, who manages our ECD, as well as to the Town's Parks and Highway Departments and Suffolk County for their assistance.
